Way Bill

This compilation was released in 1981 but I’d only seriously been introduced to it in the late 90’s.
I remember my sister insisted I meet a friend of hers and on exchanging hip hop with soul and with jazz as a common interest, we in turn became good friends.
That friend’s little bedroom less than a few years later would go on to host what I to this day refer to as: ‘The Soul Sessions’.
Just a few years after meeting we’d inadvertently created parties in his tiny room playing mostly underground if not underrated rap and underappreciated soul music. That was the musical menu and if you didn’t like what we played, you sure did after a few sips of whatever you brought in along with you.
We were just a bunch of youngsters not necessarily looking to party.
That room became a place of refuge and we were getting our grown man on.
Bill played his part.

Tales of heartfelt lessons well learnt sung softly, comfortably and reassuringly. Bill’s crooning lulls you into a warmth like no other. He’s got your full attention and still has you wrapped up and tucked in cozy like your relative did after a hot cup of something. Go ahead and press play.

RIP Bill Withers
Thank you for the music.
